Jason Brown
Bow River Hookers Fly Fishing Guide
Jason, in keeping with his last name, somehow always seems to find the browns. He has been fly fishing the Bow River and southern Alberta streams, lakes and reservoirs for over 20 years, guiding for Hookers for the past five years. His knowledge of the Bow and the trout in it, along with his jubilant personality, makes a day with Jason nothing less than spectacular.
Jason takes a cautious approach to guiding. He knows he can only do a certain amount when it comes to getting the fishers in his boat into fish. He can provide the correct flies and position the boat so the casters are placing the flies where the trout are but after doing that, the fisherman's fishing success is dictated by the abilities of the individuals holding the rods.
Casting is not an issue. Jason will provide adequate instruction to allow the fishers to cast to the trout. Aside from casting and placing the correct flies in fishy water, there are three aspects of fly fishing any trout water that impact an angler's fishing success.
- Fly presentation, presenting the flies in such a way that the trout can't resist taking them.
- Setting the hook, recognizing a strike and reacting adequately to set the hook.
- Fighting and landing the fish, giving the fish his head, letting him run when necessary and maintaining a tight line.
Some fishers take instruction well and get the hang of these aspects quickly, others do not.
Jason is adept at providing coaching on all these aspects of creating a successful day of fishing. If you're prepared to listen to his coaching and adopt practices he'll be offering to you, you'll have a day of fishing that will linger in your memory long after you've returned home.
